Live Newark is also underway. The City is developing an inclusionary zoning ordinance requiring developers who build luxury housing to also create housing for middle and lower income residents. The City's “Live Local” Program has been launched to encourage municipal employees and public school teachers to purchase homes in Newark by providing purchasers with forgivable loans to cover closing costs and rehabilitation expenses for homes in a Model Neighborhood area. The anchors are developing financial incentives to encourage more employees, faculty and staff to live in Newark and shop here. By leveraging the financial power of employees, faculty and students, Live Newark will spur population growth, increase demand
for local businesses, improve employee recruiting/retention, and increase tax revenues and economic growth.
A marketing campaign by the City and the anchors will educate employees about the advantages of living near their workplaces and publicize the availability of good local home ownership and rental opportunities.
